Food Plots – Why, What, and Do They Work?
I’m personally not here to argue or educate anyone on food plots. That discussion is all over the place. Here’s the deal for us: yes, we are still casting feeders with corn — that’s number one for me. It’s preference, and they all work if you have the wildlife.
Some folks will argue the topic, but not me. I’ll give them corn and a food plot. Not to mention, in our current field we have some majestic white and red oaks, so think acorns, my friends.
I like the way some folks describe it. Check out @GrowingDeerTV if you want an expert evaluation and to learn about food plots. That dude is the expert, not me. We are just having fun. But I take his comments on “groceries for your deer” seriously.
We were late planting and could not get the blends from local feed stores. Spring food plots are April/May, not June, but we needed our tractor to disc. We disced about an acre and broadcasted Biologic from Tractor Supply. Would have preferred a mix with clover but we will add it separately. We also put in another acre of Milo.
Why Milo? Simple — dove love it. Most dove hunters will know what I’m talking about when cleaning doves. Milo is a steady seed they look for, along with corn and sunflower.
Important note (please don’t skip): You must cut the Milo before hunting so you are not baiting. This is serious and against the law for dove hunting. If you plant it, cut it before you ever hunt over it.
