Feeders – Our Current Setup
Our current setup includes three broadcast feeders in the 20 acres with two deer stands. We will drop a stand in the bottomlands later, but we’re really saving that area for strategic hunts down the road.
Let me explain the setup:
We have two feeders in pens — one Boss Buck and one Treeline feeder — both in pens to keep the hogs out. The Boss Buck pen has a hog slammer gate that has worked great for trapping hogs in the pen. (Albeit we watched a boar clear the 36-inch panel, so maybe consider higher panels for your setup.)
It is easy: get panels, T-posts, and wiring and get to work. You decide on the setup — a lot of websites suggest tear-drop designs, but a circle pen has worked just fine for us. Stay away from corners as you are not intentionally trying to hurt animals (or at least I hope you are not).
At our ranch, there is nothing but respect for wildlife and we eat what we harvest. Just a rule I live by and try to pass down to our daughters. So if we harvest a hog, we are going to eat the meat ourselves or find a place to donate the meat.
The third feeder is a barrel feeder and works great as well. We do not have a pen on it as we are trying to get the hogs to focus on the other pen while we work on the hog population — there are a lot.
I was able to put the Boss Buck pen in myself in a couple hours, so give it a go if interested.
